LATE SEPTEMBER 2000

Mexico looks beautiful, mountains on my left and right, dessert, bushes, cacti...

A settlement lasts for seconds then nothing. With the window open, hot air engulfs my thoughts and plans.

Security check; armed police dressed as soldiers, mirrored aviators exercising every possible inch of authority. Trunks are ordered open, filed of the bus, belongings dissected, luggage interrogated.

My shoulders are peeling. I have never seen so many women with broken noses.
